"My ex for example is undiagnosed bi-polar complete with the voices in his head." (quote)
Not an expert but the voices are more a "Schizophrenic " trait than a Bipolar problem.
My wife's Bipolar. And I have observed that Bipolar people tend to be more receptive to hearing and seeing spirits. This is different than hearing voices randomly verses sensible interaction . If there is such a thing.
As I said, this is an opinion of mine from observation and loving with the problem.
For some people, when they are in the extream ends of mania or depression they have psychosis, that can cause helucinations or hearing voices that are not there. It is not super common, but common enough. But, I think he is a Rapid Cycling Bi-polar.
I mean, he would be this over the top, happy and charming, attentive person who wanted to go every where and do every thing. He had great opptimism and would make these huge plans, but never followed through because he was to busy going. And his libido was on rapid high... thus the reason I left him (I had to work and was not home enough, so he cheated on me). Then within a few weeks, he would barely get out of bed or leave the house, he would be grumpy, nothing was done right, he would obsess over the problems of life, he would not sleep well because of the voices and flash backs of his past. Then he would feel guilty that he was not finding a job or quit what ever job he found after a few days, which would make him feel worse, then he would feel guilty for how he was treating me, and get even worse....etc. But, after a couple of weeks, back to the happy, charming, optomistic person... and repeat.
He only talked about the voices when he was depressed, but I suspected they were there during the mania too, but I dont know.
But, the problem is that he got his minor in Psychology, so he felt he knew enough to "know" he was ok, and refused to ever try to get help. So, to this day, he has never been officially diagnosed, nor medicated.
I have another friend that is diagnosed and medicated, and she struggles with the voices too. She only heres them on her depression extreams. She said that typically for bi-polars they are voices that taunt you, reminding you of your miserable life, the mistakes you have made, pulling on things in the past that you can never change... then as it gets worse, it leads to suicidal suggestions.
My ex believed it was a jinn that had possesed him.
