Code Name: "Mothman" DIRECTOR'S LOGS These logs have been condensed and edited, but to the best of our ability, they remain an accurate account of the case. FIELD TRIP! I've always wanted to visit Point Pleasant, home of the infamous Mothman. I remember reading John Keel's book, The Mothman Prophecies, in my late teens. It was a powerful book. In my mind, no other journalist has deeply investigated the supernatural like Keel. Nevertheless, the story of the Mothman has had a major impact on many lives across the globe. What I found fascinating wasn't the actual sightings nor the testimony. It's this whole theory about ultra-terrestrials. What, exactly, is an ultra-terrestrial, you might ask? Good question. To my understanding, it's a being of another dimension or consciousness. It is not of human origin. The tales of Ingrid Cold telephoning Keel in the middle of the night and mysterious men in black trying to pass as humans chilled me. Who or what had the power to take the form of another human being? MOTHMAN PHOTOS Just wanted to clarify something that I saw on the episode today. Some of the photos that show possible sightings of Mothman are not legitimate. Some are known to be fraudulent. There was probably a miscommunication with post-production on what are the questionable ones versus ones that have stood the test of time. Originally, Sergey, our photographer, was going to investigate these alleged sightings of Mothman and see if he could reproduce the images himself. During his presentation, he offered up a few doctored photos of Mothman amidst unexplained ones to see what our opinions were. We often like to look at previous evidence gathered and test it, including photographic evidence. MY TAKE ON THE MOTHMAN: As you saw on the episode, we didn't uncover anything new or shocking about the Mothman myth. We simply revisited the case and conducted our own investigation. I want to believe that the Mothman exists, but the overall story of the Mothman still doesn't add up. If they are beings that are here to observe and warn us, why don't they follow a pattern and appear more frequently before other major world events? Then again, I think John Keel said it best when he wrote, "If there is a universal mind, must it be sane?" CLOSING DIRECTOR'S LOG: In short, this was a fun little investigation. I hope that, in the future, we can do a few side cases that show more of our interest and curiosity in to the unknown. |

Topher...sounds like you are there on the scene, am I getting that right?
And if you are, whatcha doin'? How come we don't see you on camera more often? Thanks for the info on the pictures... Fabulous episode! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/104.gif) -------------------- Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind. "Pooh!" he whispered.
"Yes, Piglet?" "Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw. "I just wanted to be sure of you." |

I should probably mention, that I am not the one that writes the Post Mortems. Ryan is the one that writes them. I post them here for everyone to read and discuss.

I would love to see them go further and investigate the other sightings around the world. It was a good episode.
Ryan you still didn't really mention the red light that you and Chip saw any idea what that was? Thanks Shell |

The mothman episode was awesome, and I really think it should've had an hour long investigation too.

Man I'd love to visit that place. I did see the movie "The Mothman Chronicles" with Richard Gere last week not knowing about the episode last night. I am certainly intrigued now!

My name is Joe Donato and I was born in canton ohio in 1972. I have had two encounters with what I believe to be the mothman, once at a young age of 12 and another time at 16. Both times were similar encounters but at two separate locations (one in canton ohio, and the second in mantua ohio.) Both times I was awake in my bed, and felt a build up of terror. I discovered I couldn't move. And then he moved into focus. What I saw was a black cloud of moving "smoke" with red eyes. I could make out a vestige of a man's face, but I saw no wings, or feathers of any kind. His whole form shifted and moved like smoke from a fire.
There was no communication other than him laughing at me both times in a hideous metallic voice, and then I perceived to him taking a chunk out of me mentally. The terror that I felt, is larger than I can describe and have never since felt. It was ABSOLUTE TERROR, there's no other way to describe it. Eventually it disappeared and I was left in my bed. I couldn't regain use of my legs to walk, so I crawled on the floor using my arms. And I could make out small screams to wake up my parents. The first time this happened as a 12 year old, I was convinced I met the boogeyman. The second time at 16, I tried to convince myself it was a night terror. (OR the process of having an R.E.M cycle why completely being awake.) In college I found the experience didn't sit well with me as adult, and being an art major I did a painting exhibition called the willies. The show was about the whether I had a night terror or met the boogeyman. I did a series of paintings of what happened to me and printed out my story on a bedsheet in the middle of the gallery. I thought the show was a way to come to peace with my experience and put it behind me. At my reception, a girl came up to me and said she had the same exact experience. Black see thru figure, red eyes, paralysis. It dawned on me if it were a night terror there's no reason why many people would see the exact same thing. I've attached two of the paintings I did of him to this post. I'd also like to note, this was way before the movie mothman prophesies came out. I've also shared this story with mothmanlives.com and mysterious universe. I've received many, many emails about people who have seen him/it. The majority of sightings seem to be in the West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania area and they are usually within the timeframe of 1960's to 1980's. And will tell you NONE of them paint this thing out to be peaceful/benign creature. I believe it's evil, and it uses people's fear as a food source. I believe it is intelligent, and very rare. I'd also like to note that's not the end of my paranormal experiences. I went missing one day in college not much longer after I did the show, with no memory of where I was for a full day. Another time I was driving to work in akron, missed my exit and found myself in cleveland. I was atleast an hour past my work and only a half hour had passed, there was no way I could have driven that far in that short of period of time. I've since moved away to the west coast and haven't had any paranormal experiences since then, nor do I want to. I applaud your episode but I do say, if you do find the mothman I bet you'll regret it. He's not something to mess with. keep up the good work and I love your show... sincerely, Joe Donato LINKs to PICTS http://joedonato.com/moth/motHMan_2.jpg http://joedonato.com/moth/mothman3.jpg

I think its very possible that ultra-terrestrials can emulate human beings..Its kind of a "wolf in sheeps clothing" kinda deal. To study the human race,(and/or mentor) and I believe theyve been here for a good long time. I like the question as to why they havent appeard at other world events? Maybe, regardless of the magnitude of the disaster, it is significance and message through disastrous turmoil, rather than the Unadulterated hate of mankind. There must be entropy in the world, without it, life would be chaotic and ultimately go to god knows where in a handbasket. So If we were warned before every event, it could change time, alter history, and mess natural balances. We've all suffered tragedy through life..Its a part of life. But What Iv'e come to learn is through seemingly unmericful events, we grow as people. In one way or another. -------------------- God grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference |

I think the military presence alone is enough to make the whole story fall into the folklore category. Disinformation and deceit are both military strategies, and it would not surprise me to find that those kids who first spotted "mothman" saw nothing more than some next-gen military soldier of that time.
Has anyone ever looked into the geology of the area? The bridge collapse raises an eyebrow with me in that it would take a tremendous force to cause a catastrophic failure to a bridge of that size. Military explosives testing would not be out of the picture, and the presence of the manufacturing facility does lend credence to the idea that perhaps a major blast test could have sent a shock wave through the bedrock of the area, which in turn could have targeted weakened stress points along the bridge causing the collapse. With the number of people killed and the at-the-time waining popularity of the US military's covert operations, it would have been fairly easy to rush along another story to cover up the bridge collapse. A supernatural entity, however, seems to me as far of a stretch as man someday walking on the sun. Mothman is just neat, tourist grabbing folklore, something born of a boom in science fiction. Much like Roswell and Bluff Creek, it's one of those supernaturally appealing places that will continue to draw the curious looking for their own explanations. Part of what makes America a spooky and wonderful place to live. I am a fellow Ohioan from Toledo. I happened upon your post, and I wanted to comment. First, I watched the Mothman episode, and felt very uneasy that the crew was so aggressive about finding this entity. I wasn't there, so obviously I couldn't pick up on what Chip was feeling (I am "sensitive"), but I don't think it's a passive or protective entity either. I also believe it to be connected to the Native American culture. All of our regions are linked to many tribes. I wonder if there have been any cleansing rituals done? It may also be a factor that this entity/entities feeds on the emotional states of the townspeople, who seemed to present fear, and a somewhat depressed demeanor. Do you know what I am trying to get at? Well, I hope those good people's lives get better. That whole area (OH/PA/WVA) has seen it's share of unfortunate times for many years. Michelle |

That is a very interesting story. I'm also from Ohio. One of my best friends grew up in Canton. I am sorry that you had to go through something so horrible. I hope and pray you get your wish and have no more experiences.

I thought the Mothman only appears as a warning that something bad is about to happen. Now seeing a moth gives me the creeps.

Could it be demonic? Demons are ultra-terrestrials, right?

Hi all,
I watched the episode and Mom always said, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. It just wasn't my cup of tea. Mothman is my favorite "paranormal" movie, so I'll at least say it was a bit disappointing. However, take just this as frustration from someone who was jonsing for a good paranormal fix! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing what's new with you, and to the Katie's Bar weekend. Cheers! Lisa -------------------- I shall pass through this world but once.
